LL-37 is a 37-amino acid peptide belonging to the Cathelicidin family of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). It is a critical component of the innate immune response. Mechanistically, LL-37 disrupts the cell membranes of bacteria, fungi, and viral envelopes via electrostatic interactions, leading to lysis. Beyond its antimicrobial traits, LL-37 acts as a potent immunomodulator and chemoattractant, recruiting immune cells to areas of infection or injury, neutralizing lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and promoting healthy re-epithelialization during complex wound healing scenarios.
